2016..

Really. Really fast.

Difficult yet amazing year.

Reminded me of 2014 where many tragedies happened.

Deaths, accidents..

Push on, if you're still suffering from all these pain of loss.

It's been quite a journey for me this year; with so many happenings that took me on a rollercoaster rides filled with different emotions.

Now... As usual, favourite pictures of the year.

Yet deep down you're struggling a lot because you have been deemed strong by others.

You chose not to show that vulnerable side.

But at the end of it, everything will be worth it when you finally find peace within yourself, learning how to cope with those feelings & not letting it affecting subconsciously as well.

I must say, I am really lucky to have the right people in my life.

The people whom I meet within the industry who provided me many valuable insights about life and work, as well as the lovely people in office.

And not to forget to group of friends I have from different walks of life who is still there - despite little to no communication, we can always have a good conversation and not feel foreign/awkward each time we meet.

If there's a quote I would use to summarize the year in whole, I would say;

Growth comes with Pain and with Pain, there's always Growth.

Many times we often indulge ourselves in pain - brought by the matter. But truth is that, the aftermath/lessons learned is always that one factor that made us a better version of ourselves today.

So for those of you who have been saying that 2016 sucked for you and all, don't count on the bad things that made you felt that way - instead count on the number of new goals you set for yourself in 2017 that you will indeed work on them to make it better than 2016.

It feels weird because, deep down I know that there are many issues that happened that gave me a lot to reflect - but I realised my reflections this time does not end up in a "not to do list" instead it allowed me to set goals for myself that is achievable.

This post is slightly shorter compared to my previous goodbye series, but the post that will be published tomorrow where I review my resolutions for this year and hopes for next year will be a long one definitely.

Finally, I am back.

Busy? MIA?

Actually I'm just trying to figure out - "What do I really want to achieve from this blog/site that I own".

Fame? Sponsorships? Free stuffs?

Nah.

When I first started out in 2009, blogging was merely a way to keep up with our gossip girls group (blogskins, cbox, endless linkings and mixpods)

I remembered, my very first email created to use Blogger was peipei-princess@hotmail.com (which btw, I deleted already) and my blog was called "Rachel's Daily Life".

My sister helped me to set up, and back then her blog was really nice too! Her generation did it better than ours (as in, girls in schools having blogs to share stuffs).

I realized content that I was posting; some weren't true, some were just boring stuffs.... Even if my life can be different and all; there was clearly not much of a purpose to blog there.

Well, mainly there to spam each other's C-Box. Back then I didn't even knew that views could be tracked, the last thing I remembered was that yes people do read that blog; maybe about 3-5k of audience since it was just a thing among my girls and I

Then, as I moved on to secondary school - I made my worse mistake by creating a new blog that acted like a personal diary.

I was sharing content that was way too personal, thinking nobody would read when back then some of my classmates actually took the content as part of their conversation topics (but no lah I don't blame you guys, we were all childish kids).

It took a while, and finally in 2014 I started out the blog of racheljiaang.com.

Not easy at all; like I mentioned, many things changed - blogs aren't just our diary anymore. It became an advertising platform as well. When I started to know about XX and some other "Bloggers".

Thinking back, I didn't look good or whatsoever. Neither was I some object or viral figure on any social media platforms. How to be a "blogger"?

I have to admit, after joining this ''online sensation" kind of competition, I realized I didn't fit in this whole idea of "bloggers - free food - fashion - OOTD - reviews" blah blah kind of thing.

It's like I was trying too hard just to be like them even though I know I can't.

Moving on, I started off with my first ever review (which by the way, wasn't sponsored at ALL) for Owndays Sunglasses. And BAM. That went pretty viral within a day. It first garnered over 500 UNIQUE views and many came from Japan; then I realized why - Owndays Facebook shared it and even one of their staff from Japan's HQ shared it on his facebook.

See the power of one share can bring?

Till date, I have a total of 10962 unique views and counting for this very post.

But the thing is, it has been giving me so much views on this blog even as I was inactive for some period of time, stats always showed that my readers are generally here for that review.

I thought to myself; Why?

"One share only ma... what can it do?"

1) I wasn't any "blogger/influencer" big shot.

Hence it was generally perceived as more reliable.

2) Everything was basically MY OPINION and not a PAID OPINION.

Content was pretty balanced, information and my own opinions about the sunglasses.

Note: I am not trying to say that a sponsored post isn't reliable, but back then people weren't transparent about it.

Like some renowned salon that has many bloggers back then raving about it for its multiple coloured ombre dyes which took Singapore by storm - yet only to be another disaster when real reviews can be found on fashion undercover (if I'm not wrong) whereby stories of hair getting "fried" at the salon unfolds with the bill soaring up to $500+ (because it's ombre ma and your quoted Blogger Name discount is actually what brought you there).

You see..

1) Their service might be good - but it's only for their so called influencers and bloggers whom they provide services in exchange for an Instagram post or feature on their blogs.

2) Yet when it comes to you - a consumer; things just don't go as well. You might be paying for a junior stylist. They might be served by the salon's director stylist.

you never know.

Why not. Since the bloggers can share their opinions (without even mentioning it's sponsored) - why can't a consumer complain when it's simply double standards.

Until today, especially after learning POM with my beloved Ching Chong Lecturer, I still stand by my belief that:

"Consumers are your best advertisers if needed, they pay for your products and services - even if they aren't big media personalities online - WOMM (Word of Mouth Marketing) is what they are best at. Good or bad, one word of mouth can allow the entire office or organization to know about YOU."

Even as an emcee, I tell my audience this..

Why provide the best for someone who doesn't use your services AT ALL (Until you hired him/her as your official celebrity/blogger-influencer to endorse for your brand) while paying them still.

The term "Brand Loyalty" is basically experiencing a slow death in the market.

With the rise of so many new markets and platforms, majority of the people would opt for a cheaper option (due to economy this year as well) or go for one time trials to benefit themselves. Is it wrong? Nah, even I do that as well.

That's because I don't see a reason to stay committed when I have supported for the longest time.. just treated like a regular stranger and not someone of value.

For me, I am willing to pay for a service/product even though I know that the cost is low, but the value is great. And what comes along with it - service, attitude etc.

That pricing we see, does not only contribute to the product's cost ONLY, but their electricity bills, staffs' salary, own revenue as well as rental... What others usually see is the big picture.

It is not wrong to get celebrities to endorse for your brand, but well - balance it and treat your consumers right too.

This is also why till today, I only advertise/write about brands that I believe in. Same goes for hosting; never ask me to promote your beauty packages that will only end up as a pressurizing time for the consumer cooped in a room forced to purchase more. I do not believe in in-ethical practices in order to generate sales.

Although brands do approach me too, I personally do reach out to some and let them know that I would like to feature them. If I get a discount the next time, good for me. If I can get a discount for my readers; good for all of you. However the difference is that I am not getting paid in a lump sum of money to "advertise".

What is 10% discount like? It's more of a three way thing where all of us do benefit from it: content & savings.

To be honest why my blog was named as my name back then it's because many were doing the same: easy to remember, you are your own brand, sounds good with a .com domain..

But I realized it isn't what I wanted.

Probably Wednesday from Addams Family (Adult Series) gave me the inspiration for my brand's name - Thirteentuesday. (You can find out more about my brand subsequently at "About" page)

It was that unique me.

I don't want to be an influencer/blogger nor to be labelled as that.

I just want to be seen as someone who can achieve her goals who's also self opinionated to write down her thoughts and bring content to people.

So it brings back to the question I always asked myself.

What content do I want to bring to all of you?

I consider myself as a general blog writer, and I always wanted to touch on topics like national issues, sports and feature writing for brands with occasional life stories/obstacles I face which might be inspirational for all.

In addition, this website would also serve as a digital portfolio for my works & emcee profile as well. (that is why I have my menu tabs for easier navigation - although not ready yet)

Thus.. this isn't just a regular blog. It's my personal website - Thirteentuesday.

I might be exploring into sales as well in the next 5 years (I always wanted to design planners) so yeah, a female entrepreneur might be on her way!

All in all, I just want to thank all those who have stood by since day 1 this site was set up, so many changes; but you're still here.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart, and my 2016 yearly goodbye post will be up on 31st December as usual.

Till then. [full-width]

Hello all! I am finally back with a new post! I have seen some of you struggling on your write ups via twitter and I am sure this blog post can rather give you some of you tips! Other than that, I would like to share with you what DPA is like, and what are some of the things you should expect this year!

Some background story of me if this is your first time reading my blog - I am a Year 1 student currently in Ngee Ann Polytechnic majoring in Mass Communications! I got in the school via DPA in August last year.

Last year at this time trust me I was frantically searching all about MASS COMM DPA NP etc.

Here are some blog posts for you to know more about my journey!

1. 600?
2. DPA, again
3. Direct Poly Admission & it's surprises
4. O's Results and thoughts

This year MOE has announced that both DPA and JPSAE (which is like dpa but happens AFTER you receive your O level results) will be folded into ONE exercise called "Early Admissions Exercise" which will take place during the usual DPA period.

So, please do not think that after your results you can still JPSAE to the school of your choice! It's either now, or never.

• Write about accomplishments that are RELEVANT to the course. For e.g. - winning top 10 for sports day isn't relevant to the course of arts. So there is a no need for you to mention it at all. Instead, if you have taken part in some art competitions and won prizes; go ahead and mention!
• Show your aptitude by mentioning the AEMs you have attended (best if it's relevant to the course of study/by the institution you're applying) with the grade attained.
• Talk about your CCA if it's related to the course & the achievements.
• If there is space, mention how can the school help you to achieve your career aspiration.

"I have a strong passion for broadcast media and I love to talk, I feel that I am not only very eloquent but the best speaker in school as claimed by my peers and teachers. I have won awards in my competitions such as the YMCA PESA, where I won a bronze honour roll. Also I took part in the radio module AEM last year in NP and I got the highest grade which was A. I think that with my special voice I can definitely contribute to the broadcast media industry in future and NP's MCM is the right place for me to begin this lifelong journey. My passion is what it takes to be and do the best out of me."

I suggest you to not type on the application form itself as there is a timer where the page will auto log out, hence do plan your draft carefully and consult your teachers if you can! Or you can ask me as well via (Like my page then PM me from there :))  Facebook or Ask.fm (I don't have notifications so I'll try to reply ASAP!)

Basically to show what are some of the stuffs that you have done that is related to the course, and more about your results and achievements.

Here are some of the must brings (no matter which course you are applying!!) as part of your portfolio!

Results slips are important, and if you look clearly... I had 2 F9s when I went for the interview, so please do not think that you're not worthy enough to apply for EAE!

CCA records to show what are the activities that you have been involved, if your CCA grade is a D7 or E8 I do suggest that you don't bring if you feel that it may affect the impression of you towards the lecturers who interviews you.

AEM Certificates if any! Do bring along to show that you have indeed completed a relevant module that's related to the course. Trust me, this cert aids you A LOT!

If you have already taken your O Level Mother Tongue Examination earlier last year as you are taking Higher Mother Tongue, do bring along the certificate as well to show that you have already took one subject and you're more driven to do even better in your subsequent papers!

Testimonials are important as the lecturer can briefly read through what does the teacher think of you! I had 3 because I was kinda "kiasu". Testimonials from form teacher and CCA teacher is highly recommended!

Any school awards that proves your character!

These certificates will showcase the competitions that you have joined, especially if it's related to the course in a way or another.

Now that I have gone through the basic things to bring, I will now show you what else I brought since I was going for MCM's interview.

So what do I mean by relevant information? I actually took part in an audition to be 987's be the one but failed (which I believe is due to my age :p) but I did well during the audition and got in round 2 and had comments from Kimberly and Gerald that they both liked my voice a lot. So since MCM does radio production etc and they were also involved in the audition, I decided to include to show them that hey! I am passionate about broadcast media and so I joined to prove myself.

That instagram post was really, crazy. I showed them how much I wanted to be part of DPA//MCM. That post was posted right after my test during AEM (which I done well) and it's sort of like a testimony//evidence of my goal. If you look closely, one of my lecturer actually commented as well and yeap, I am here!

I have been blogging for a long time and since in MCM we also learn about marketing and reviewing I decided to show some of the ads and reviews I did. I included my most viewed post which was the Owndays post as well with it's statistics printed on top.

As dumb as I could be, I only started having adsense (after rounds of application and missing letters from google) on May 2015! Which explained why were my earnings lesser as compared to today.
By showing them my adsense earnings I can say that readers to click on ads on my blog that allows me to do what I like while making money.

I joined the competition CNOS last year, since it was related to social media I decided to include it as well, after all "mcm".

And I mentioned about the opportunities I had for e.g. being emcee for a while to promote my stuffs and getting good comments from Soo Wei who is also a part time lecturer in NP MCM. Xiaxue, prominent blogger also commented that she liked my confidence a lot! *fangirls*

Lastly, I actually included a viral video which I did. I decided to private it as it was getting too much attention and I had people adding me on facebook/messaging me etc. so yeah! However, since youtube is sort of related to MCM as well, might as well?

Yup, so those are the things that I included in my portfolio! Don't worry if you do not have many stuffs to show because quantity isn't everything!

• Do not be late! (Being late gives the interviewers a bad impression of yourself)
• Do NOT wear too revealing/inappropriate attire. Such as high slit skirts and low v tops. Or even jeans, shorts. The best attire? School uniform!

17 of us in total! We were all from different faculties and courses. Good to also build your network, you never know when you need help!

Taken during day 2 with our CULs. They were the most amazing seniors ever, they bought huge dominos pizzas for us, we had heart to heart talk sessions where more stories about polytechnic life was told. Well, what happens in loft stays in the loft!

Other than my orientation group mates, I also met lovely girls who stayed in the same apartment as me! They were from other courses too, so yeap!

After 8 weeks, it was closed by a memorable overseas trip to Koref Malaysia.. followed by that final moment we all yearned for.

With some of my onederful group mates, my very first group of friends.

After months and days, I finally received my O Level results on 11th January 2016, which was on Monday.

Some of you may not end up in your dream course, but always believe that "Everything Happens For A Reason" and that in time to come, you'll realize that "Hey! I actually like what I'm learning now"

Hello 2016!
