Miss Singapore Beauty Pageant 2018 Grand Finals

September 03, 2018

Last Saturday, I was very honoured to be invited to the Grand Finals of Miss Singapore Beauty Pageant 2018 which was graced by MP Charles Chong, Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore! After 3 months, it is now time to unveil the Grand Winners of the night.

Had a great view from the usual table! Banquet team at Orchid Country Club was great as usual.

Menu of the night!

Then, we had our opening by the Official Emcees of the evening, Paul Foster and Michelle Lee of Beam Artistes! If you would like to engage them for your event do contact artiste@beam.com.sg

It's Paul Foster's 5th year in hosting the Miss Singapore Beauty Pageant! Time flies, but his age never seems to fly.

We had the opening performance brought to us by Handicap Welfare Association, which is the Official Adopted Charity of Miss Singapore Beauty Pageant 2018 as well! It was a great performance that kickstarted the night!

After the opening performance, we were then treated to the Opening Dance brought to us by the finalists of Miss Singapore Beauty Pageant 2018 - where they wore their custom dresses by Blumix (by Blum & Co) as well as their heels from Anna Nucci. Not to forget, their beautiful makeup done by the School of Makeup as well as hair by Mi The Salon/Salon Vim!

Then, we had an opening speech by the Organizing Chairperson - Ms Jasmine Chye who was the reigning Ms Singapore Global Beauty Queen back then in 2014 who went on to represent Singapore in 3 different Beauty Pageants!

Followed by the Managing Director of ERM Singapore, Ms Angela Tay.

Remember the Talent Showcase held weeks ago at One KM Mall? The Top 4 Finalists then performed for the last time, vying for the title of "Best in Talent"!

#9 - Megan Chong performing a dance item with her very flexible moves!

I simply loved her performance which was different from her showcase back then, and she looked great as well! The camera loved her and it was so easy to capture her in her awestruck moves.

And finally, #12 - Sarah Chang our vocal powerhouse who sang her rendition of "Sway" Loved her gown!

After the Talent Showcase by the Top 4 Finalists, everyone's favourite segment came - the Bikini Showcase that was brought to us by Inner Desire, the Official Swimwear of Miss Singapore Beauty Pageant as well as the Official Pageant Heels, Anna Nucci

The Critical Moment came.

Top 8 Announcement!

In no particular order:

#17 - Corrine Lim
#13 - Candice Li
#12 - Sarah Chang
#16 - Michelle Poa
#6 - Regina Chew
#3 - Chan Qian Yi

But... there was a surprise.

Two of the finalists actually had a tie in their scores.

Which meant that for the longest time in history - we have a Top 9 situation!

The other two finalists who tied are:

#10 - Katie Dai
#8 - Anna Dong

My favourite segment, the Q&A then came.

Which went in the order of the announcement of the Top 8.

The ladies will have to pick 1 question from the box, share their Charity Platform and lastly - answering the question they picked.

#11 - Alavie Lee

Her Platform:
"Singapore Cancer Society, because of my Mum. Thank you, Mum! My mum is actually a stage 4 cancer patient, however, she is still strongly supporting all of us. Thus, I would like to support the Singapore Cancer Society so that we will be able to encourage the early detection of cancer. From there, an early treatment which will increase the chances of survival."

Her Question:
What is your definition of success?

Her Answer:
"My definition of success at a point in time was when I managed to complete my degree, which is a full-time degree in 2.5 years while working full-time as an events personnel. To me, that was a success. But today, if I were to win the crown; that would be the definition of success."

#17 - Corrine Lim

Her Platform:
"I volunteer at "Kids Read" an organization under the National Library Board of Singapore which helps to impart literacy skills on young children between 3 to 6 years old and above from low-income families. Literacy skills are important to help prepare young children in reading and writing effectively to improve the future of the younger generation in the society. Literacy is also crucial to economic development as well as individual and community well-being. "

Her Question:
What would the challenges you have to face during the participation of this pageant?

Her Answer:
"There were a lot of challenges faced. First of all, the time management as I have a full-time job and I have to give my 100% to this beauty pageant itself. Next, all the contestants would be very experienced hence I will have to fight on harder to win this crown."

#13 - Candice Li

Her Platform:
"As a law student, I would like to increase access of justice to people from all walks of life in our society."

Her Question:
If you do not win this pageant tonight, which contestant would you like to win?

Her Answer:
"If I were not to win the pageant tonight, I would like contestant #9 Megan Chong to win the pageant tonight. This is because, throughout the pageant journey, she has been a very supportive friend. Furthermore, I believe she has the qualities that a pageant queen should have, which are - gratefulness, perseverance, ambition and the drive to achieve what she wants in life. And these are my reasons as to why I will choose Megan Chong as the winner, should I not win the crown tonight."

#12 - Sarah Chang

Her Platform:
"Boystown, a foster care service in Singapore. I believe that every child needs to be cared for and nurtured; to be remembered by society."

Her Question:
What is the most significant accomplishment in your life and why?

Her Answer:
"My most significant accomplishment in my life is actually joining the pageant. I never had self-confidence or self-esteem to stand on stage and be who I am. Furthermore, I am really happy to be part of the top 8 and it's been a great honour to be able to sing in front of everyone. Thank you!"

#16 - Michelle Poa

Her Platform:
"I support the BABES Organization which proactively reaches out to underaged teenage mothers and supports them throughout their pregnancy. One of my best friends was actually pregnant when she was 16 years old. Having witnessed the hardship and the struggles she has been through, I am determined to support and raise awareness on the issue through talks and workshops so as to empower them and educate them on how to better protect themselves."

Her Question:
If you win tonight, how would you use your title to benefit others?

Her Answer:
"As Miss Singapore 2018, I believe that I have the values to make things go right. My platform; the BABES Organization I believe they need someone impactful enough to make an impact and empower young girls nowadays on how to better protect themselves and how to be a better version of themselves mentally and physically. I believe Beauty Queens should not be judged based on their beauty, personality or physique alone, but rather the intellectual skills, wisdom and responsibility. Also, to look for the good in others, to empower themselves. Thank you!"

#6 - Regina Chew

Her Platform:
"Breast Cancer Campaign, as I have friends who are experiencing it now. And it really pains me a lot so I would like to use this opportunity to get people to join the Breast Cancer Campaign such as the Pink Ribbon Campaign from the Breast Cancer Foundation. As well as to raise awareness from social media platforms."

Her Question:
What do you think is the most important social movement for your generation and why?

Her Answer:
"I am concerned about our growing population aged above 55. Why? We must ensure that there is an adequate system in places such as health care, family and long-term care. I believe that by working together, they can provide programs for our parents and even our grandparents. So let's work hard towards it."

#3 - Chan Qian Yi

Her Platform:
"My platform is raising awareness for the people who require housing needs all around the world. As a member of the Tabitha Foundation - a Non-Profit Organization that raises funds for people in Cambodia to build houses. Then, I see the need for fundraising for proper housing all around the world. If I win Miss Singapore tonight, I will use my voice to raise awareness through Social Media as well as to continue to grow this effort so more people will get more help."

Her Question:
If you were judging this pageant tonight, what characteristics would you look for in the contestants when choosing a winner?

Her Answer:
"One of the characteristics I will look for is for a woman who carries the essence of a true Singaporean woman. The reason so, as Miss Singapore we stand in front of a national stage and represent the whole of Singapore. So, if I win Miss Singapore tonight, I will be a proud candidate of Singapore."

#10 - Katie Dai

Her Platform:
"Education Support for underprivileged children. In Singapore, we are fortunate that most children live in stable families with steady incomes. Therefore, it might be easy to overlook underprivileged children. They come from families with poor parental support or low wages, as a result, they may seek short-term stress relief or work laborious jobs and often may neglect their education as a result. However, education is so important to stay competitive and in the long run to help earn a bigger income to pull their family out of the situation. So as Miss Singapore 2018, it would be my privilege to collaborate with the Singapore Children's Society to help raise awareness and funds to support these children."

Her Question:
What message would you give to the world about beauty pageants and the ladies who compete in them?

Her Answer:
"Many people have asked me this question when I first joined this pageant. To be honest, I am very honoured and privileged to be able to participate in this. I would love to thank ERM Organization for providing me with this opportunity. To all beauty pageants around the world, thank you for giving the chance to us girls to transform ourselves because I myself have seen so many changes and to the lovely group of ladies who participated in this pageant, congratulations to you, you are confident and you have the chance to be bold and beautiful like me, thank you!"

#8 - Anna Dong

Her Platform:
"Zero-Waste Singapore, an organization that eliminates pollution and promotes a healthier environment. I think it's time for us to play a part in protecting our mother earth to build a better environment for our future generation.''

Her Question:
If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be?

Her Answer:
"Stereotypes. I believe many of us have stereotypes of certain types of people or things that you see/come in touch with. So I would like everyone to have an open heart and mind to be willing to accept everyone and everyone's disadvantages and disabilities and to have a more inclusive environment for everyone."

Listen here!

William So from Hong Kong flew down specially to perform for us! What a childhood classic for myself and to have heard him live, my September started off well! This is a must sing in KTV Sessions.

William later went on to sing a duet with one of our beautiful vocal powerhouse, #12 Sarah Chang.
